Acquisition of Mobile Device Management Leader, Fromdistance, Completes Phase 1 of Numara’s ITOM Cloud Strategy, Delivering Integrated Mobile Device Management, Service Management and Endpoint Lifecycle Management
Tampa, Fla., October 18, 2011 – Numara® Software, Inc. today detailed its new strategy to deliver the first comprehensive cloud portfolio that seamlessly enables IT management to integrate mobile device, service and endpoint lifecycle management, and present these ITOM capabilities to the IT support staff in a single pane of glass. To support this vision, the company acquired Fromdistance, a leader in cloud-based mobile device management (MDM). Numara’s complete cloud portfolio will be available in November.
“Companies have rushed to bring to the market cloud solutions that only address a small segment of IT management issues with no one fully integrating service management and device management solutions; until now,” said Dave Hansen, Numara CEO. “With the Fromdistance acquisition and the integration of our cloud-based service and endpoint management technologies, we are raising the bar by delivering end to end cloud-based IT operations management. This enables us to deliver device management tools, whether they are physical, virtual or mobile, as well as the essential service management tools that orchestrate the overall IT service.”
It’s no secret that cloud and mobile are the two primary drivers in today’s IT operations market. Earlier this year, Gartner projected that enterprises would spend $112 billion on cloud-related technologies in 2011, with an increase to $150 billion by 2013. The firm also reported that 428 million mobile devices were sold globally in the first quarter of 2011. While many companies have embraced these market trends, the rush to be the first provider has resulted in a proliferation of cloud portfolios lacking certain capabilities. Disparate service offerings have driven customers to engage with different providers for their various cloud needs, adding complexity and cost. With the incorporation of Fromdistance in its cloud strategy, Numara addresses these issues head on.
Numara Cloud Solutions
Unlike competitive cloud offerings, which are specialized and highly fragmented, Numara’s suite of highly integrated cloud solutions address the full portfolio of mobile device, endpoint lifecycle and service management. Numara now provides medium to large enterprises with a single cloud-based solution that can manage, secure, control, track, remediate and retire all devices whether they are servers, desktops, laptops, tablets or smartphones.
“It is inefficient and costly for companies to use multiple cloud providers for expertise in certain areas of IT management,” said Matt Dircks, vice president of products at Numara. “When it comes to deploying cloud solutions, customers are demanding a flexible, secure and integrated solution. Our new cloud portfolio and expanded capabilities have uniquely positioned us to be the single supplier of cloud solutions customers have requested. Additionally, we deliver this service via three tier 1 datacenters in the United States, Europe and Far East, uniquely leveraging IPv6 and allowing us to provide class-leading speed, security and redundancy.”
Focused on managing and securing physical, virtual and mobile devices as well as optimizing the service management of all underpinning IT operations, Numara’s cloud-based product offerings will be delivered starting in November.
Fromdistance Acquisition
“We are very excited to join the Numara team,” said Jouko Vierumäki, Fromdistance CEO and founder. “Incorporating our mature mobile device management technology into a broader IT operations management solution is the logical step for us and one that will have great benefit to our respective customers.”
Fromdistance’s technology has been identified by Gartner as a strong niche player in its April 2011 magic quadrant for mobile device management software. The acquisition will not only benefit existing Numara customers who can now manage and secure their mobile devices from a single pane of glass, but will benefit Fromdistance customers and partners as well. For the first time, companies will reap the benefits of being able to integrate their mobile solutions with service and endpoint lifecycle management solutions. Vierumäki will assume a leadership role in Numara’s product group where he and his team will also continue working with existing Fromdistance customers. The terms of the acquisition were not revealed.

First Company to Deliver Service Management, Endpoint Management and Mobile Device Management Solutions Via the Cloud
Tampa, Fla., October 18, 2011 – Numara® Software, Inc., a global leader in service management and PC lifecycle management solutions for IT professionals, today announced that it has acquired mobile device management leader Fromdistance, enabling Numara to provide customers with solutions to manage and secure mobile devices across all of the major mobile operating systems. The acquisition strategically positions Numara with core mobile device management capabilities that will be integrated into its robust service and asset management solutions already providing medium to large enterprises with a comprehensive solution to track, manage, remediate and retire all endpoint devices whether they are servers, desktops, laptops, tablets or smartphones.
“With the acquisition of Fromdistance we are excited by the opportunity to merge leading edge mobile device management technology with our service, asset and lifecycle management solutions,” said Dave Hansen, Numara CEO. “We are now steps ahead of our competitors, as the only company that can unite the management of any device, whether it is traditional, mobile, physical or virtual.”
“Managing the plethora of mobile devices in the enterprise has emerged as one of IT’s biggest operational challenges,” said Matt Dircks, vice president of products at Numara. “Effectively solving this challenge requires an integrated solution for managing and controlling all endpoint devices, including mobile devices through their lifecycle. With the Fromdistance acquisition Numara will be the only company providing a single, integrated management context across any device, be it traditional desktop, laptop computers or mobile devices such as smartphones or tablets.”
Fromdistance has been identified by Gartner as a strong niche player in its April 2011 Magic Quadrant for mobile device management software. The acquisition will not only benefit existing Numara customers, but will also benefit Fromdistance customers and partners. This strategy ultimately empowers companies to reap the benefits of consolidated endpoint management, whether they are physical, virtual or mobile. IT will be able to manage their mobile estate, whether personal or corporate and leverage its central service management and lifecycle management processes and policies. Jouko Vierumäki, CEO and founder of Fromdistance, will assume a leadership role in Numara’s product group where he and his team will also continue working with existing Fromdistance customers. The terms of the acquisition were not revealed.
“We are very excited to join the Numara Software team,” said Vierumäki. “Strategically, incorporating our mature mobile device management technology into a broader IT operations management solution is critical. You will see other vendors follow, but Numara’s strategy is leading the way. This is a very logical next step for us and one that will have great benefit to our respective customers.”
Numara’s newly acquired mobile device management solutions are easily re-branded and able to integrate into any IT environment, making them well suited to be leveraged by MSPs, systems integrators, carriers and operators.

Businesses are under pressure to ease management and reduce costs while retaining and enhancing competitive advantages, such as flexibility, reliability, scalability, and security. The fundamental use of virtualization to help consolidate many servers on a single system while maintaining isolation helps address these demands. One of the main benefits of server consolidation is a lower total cost of ownership (TCO), not just from lowering hardware requirements but also from lower power, cooling, and management costs.
Businesses also benefit from server virtualization through infrastructure optimization, both from an asset utilization standpoint as well as the ability to balance workloads across different resources. Improved flexibility of the overall environment and the ability to freely integrate 32-bit and 64-bit workloads in the same environment is another benefit.
Microsoft Hyper-V Server is a stand-alone product that provides a simplified, reliable, cost-effective, and optimized virtualization solution enabling organizations to improve server utilization and reduce costs. It allows organizations to consolidate workloads onto a single physical server and is a good solution for organizations that want a basic and simplified virtualization solution for consolidating servers as well as for development and test environments. Low utilization infrastructure workloads, departmental applications, and simple branch office workloads are also candidates to virtualize using Hyper-V Server.
